The route begins with an ascent of the Haut Bugey plateaux in the Ain department, heading towards the magnificent Lac Genin. The route then takes riders up to the Plateau du Retord, with its awesome views and stunning forests, valleys and picturesque villages. The route continues through the Ain mountains towards the Grand Colombier, the day’s main challenge with its 17km climb and an average gradient of 7.2%. It is now an iconic climb and is the Challenge Performer timed section for this first stage. After crossing the Haut Valromey, riders will reach the Plateau d’Hauteville and our overnight accommodation via the Col de la Rochette.
